The ratio when 3 l of water is added to the mixture = 4:1

Total volume of the mixture = 42 l

Let the initial amount of alcohol in the be equal to x.

Initial water in the mixture = 42 - x

Given that ratio of alcohol in the mixture upon the water = 6:1

=> x / 42-x = 6/1

=> x = 252 - 6x

=> 7x = 252

=> x = 36

Alcohol = 36 l , water = 6 l

When 3l of water is added to the mixture -

Amount of alcohol = 36 l

Amount of water = 9 l

Ratio = 36/9 = 4:1
