With the acceleration of

Your 1/3 of your weight divided by your total weight will give you the respective acceleration

The acceleration should be 2g/3

Given : The rope can support one third of the weight.

To find : The acceleration by which we can safely slide down.

Solution :

We can simply solve this numerical problem by using the following process. (our goal is to calculate the required acceleration)

Now, let the mass of the person = m

And, acceleration of the gravity = g

So, the weight (downward force) of the person = m × g = mg

Now,

Breaking strength of the rope = ⅓ × weight of the person = (mg/3)

Let, the minimum acceleration required to safely slide down = a

So,

Tension in the rope shall be :

= mg - ma

Now, for the given requirements the tension in the rope shall be equal to the breaking strength of the rope.

So,

mg - ma = (mg/3)

m (g - a) = m × (g/3)

g-a = g/3

g - (g/3) = a

a = (3g - g)/3

a = 2g/3

Hence, the acceleration should be 2g/3
