Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

When the period of investments are different for both the partners we need to calculate equivalent investment amount

Lets Say if X invests ‘x’ amount for ‘a’ months

and Y invests ‘y’ amount for ‘b’ months

Then their profit sharing ratio will be xa : yb

Going by the above formula, in the above question we have X investment as 1/3, so simple formula we can find Y's investment = 1- 1/3= 2/3

For simplification we can take X's investment as 1 and Y's investment as 2

X has invested for 9 months

Let No. of months Y has invested as ‘z’ months

Y receives 2/5 of the profit

so X's profit = 1–2/5 = 3/5

so profit sharing ratio between X and Y is 3:2

Going by the formula discussed above

xa: yb = 3:2

1*9 : 2*z = 3:2

9 : 2z = 3:2

9*2 = 3*2z

18 = 6z

6z = 18

z = 3

Hence Y's money was used in business for 3 months
