Let the number of people be x
He will shake hands with everyone except himself =x-1
Total number of handshakes =28
This can be done in x(x-1)/2 = 28
x²-x=56
x²-x-56=0
x²-8x+7x-56=0
x(x-8)+7(x-8)=0
(x-8)(x+7)=0
x=8 or x= -7
Hence answer is 8 because number of people cannot be in negative.
