F1 progeny is purple and F2 progeny is 3 (purple) : 1 (white).

Explanation:

  • Mendel is known as the father of genetics. He explained the laws of genetics, laws of independent assortment and the concept of dominance.
  • The purple flower has genotype PP and the recessive white flower has genotype pp. The cross between the pure breeding line is as follows:

Parent :   PP   ×     pp

Gametes :   P and p

F1 genotype    Pp ( purple flower)

  • The cross between the F1 progeny is as follows:

Parents :  Pp        ×        Pp

F2 progent     PP, Pp, Pp ( purple) and pp ( white).

The genotype ratio is 1:2:1.

The phenotype ratio is 3:1.

Inheritance can be defined as the transfer of traits from the parents to the offsprings. This way the traits are passed from the one generation to the next generation.

Explanation:

The law of dominance which is one of the law of inheritance given by Mendel after conducting the pea experiments.

The offspring always inherit a dominant trait although may receive a dominant and a recessive genes.

According to the given experiment

Purple color of flower can be represented by: PP

White color of flower can be represented by: pp

Thus after cross, the visible traits in F1 generation shows that the all flowers are of purple color and in F2 generation 3 flowers were of purple color and 1 is of white color.

The traits are inherited independently thus the white color of flower the recessive trait did not expressed in first generation but expressed in second generation. This satisfy the law of independent assortment.
