Answer:
In a pond ecosystem, the food chain starts with phytoplanktons.
Explanation:
A freshwater ecosystem is a pond ecosystem in which different organisms depend on each other for survival and to meet their nutritional needs. Light can penetrate into the ponds, it is capable of supporting a diverse range of water plants and animals.
The pond ecosystem is under the Lentic ecosystem. It means a body of still water ranging from ponds, ditches, seasonal ponds, swamps and lakes.
Ponds facilitate plant growth due to light penetration, as they are not very deep.
Food chain in pond ecosystem:
There should be a flow of energy within it, which is very important for an ecosystem to exist. The ultimate source of energy is the Sun.
Producer Level: It includes both rooted and floating algae. Algae are microscopic marine organisms also called Phytoplanktons.
Eg: blue-green algae, cyanobacteria
Primary Consumers: It consists of small herbivores that feed on producers like algae and also other water plants to gain energy. These microscopic animals are called Zooplanktons.
Eg; snails, tadpoles, small fish.
Secondary Consumers: These are the ones who feed on primary consumers.
Eg: frogs, crayfish, reptiles, turtles etc.
Tertiary Consumers: They eat both primary and secondary consumers.
Eg: hawks, small mammals, human beings.
However, Humans are the top consumers.
Decomposers: Scavengers, fungi, some bacteria are the last consumers. They break down the dead and decaying aquatic plants and animals.
The recycling of nutrients by decomposers makes the nutrients available to new generations of plants.
