In a potentiometer experiment, two primary cells are connected in series to support each other and then connected to oppose each other. The balance points are obtained at 4m and 1m respectively.
What is the ratio of emf of the two cells?

Answer: - 5:3

Explanation:

E₁ + E₂ = L₁ + L₂ .......... Supporting

E₁ - E₂ = L₁ - L₂ ........... Opposing

L₁ + L₂ = 400 cm ..... l

L₁ - L₂ = 100 cm ...... ll

On adding equation l and ll we get ,

L₁ + L₂ + L₁ - L₂ = 400 + 100

2L₁ = 500

L₁ = 250 cm and L₂ = 150 cm

E₁/E₂ = L₁/L₂

= 250/150

= 5/3

= 5:3

The ratio of ε₁:ε₂ is 5:3.
