Here it is given that 'x' beats 'y' by 60 m or 5 seconds.

Which means 'x' was travelling 60 m in 5 seconds

 \:\:

 \sf \implies  Speed = \frac { 60 } { 5 }

 \:\:

 \sf \implies  Speed = 12 m/s

 \:\:

 \sf \implies  12 = \frac { 300 } { Time }

 \sf \boxed{ Time \: taken \: by \: 'x' = 25 seconds}

 \sf \implies  Speed = \frac { 300 } { 30 }

 \:\:

 \sf \boxed{ Speed \: of \:  'y' \: = 10m/second }

Concept

The speed formula can be defined as the rate at which an object covers some distance.The formula for the speed of a given body can be expressed as,  Speed=\frac{Distance}{Time} .

Given

We have given the distance 300 m and x beats y by 60 m or 5 seconds.

Find

We are asked to determine the time taken by x to complete the race and speed of y .

Solution

As x wins by 60 meter to y that means when x completes 300 m y would have covered distance =300-60=240m

Now x beats y by 5 secs. This means y takes 5 more seconds to complete the race

As y is 60 m behind when x completes the race, so y takes 5 secs to complete 60 m , so speed of y can be calculated as follows

Speed=\frac{Distance}{Time}\\\\=\frac{60}{5} \\=12ms^-^1

Total time of y to complete 300 m race =\frac{Distance}{Speed}

                         =\frac{300}{12} \\\\=25s

Total time of x to complete 300 m race =25-5=20s

Therefore, time taken by x to complete the race is 20s and speed of y is 12 m\s
