In a rectangle,

Perimeter = 40 cm.

Length = three times the breadth.

Here, we can say that,

As breadth of the rectangle is an unknown quantity, we can represent it by a variable ‘x’.

Then, as per the question

Length is 3 times the breadth; length = 3 × x => 3x.

Formula to find perimeter of rectangle:

  \bold \green{perimeter = 2 \times (l + b).}

Then,

=> 40 = 2 (3x + x).
