9 students

Rakesh is 12th from the left.

That is, he has 11 students on his left.

After Rakesh and Kashi interchange their positions, Kashi is in the 27th position from the right.

Thus, Rakesh had 26 on his right.

Therefore,

Total number of students = number of students in his left+himself+number

                                             of students in his right

                                          = 11+1+26

                                          = 38

Rakesh is in 12th position from left

Kashi is in 17th position from right

Number of students between them = 38-(12+17)

                                                           = 38-29

                                                           = 9

Or

After interchange,

Rakesh is in 22nd position

Kashi is in 12th position

Number of students between them are 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21

Number of students between them = 9 students
