in a sample of 100 nails, 18 of them have only defective heads , 12 contain defective tail ends and 9 contains both defectives . what is the probability that a nail selected at random is either a defective head or a defective tail

:. probability of defective head

favourable outcomes

= –--------------------------------

total outcomes

= 9+18/100

= 27/100

AND probability of defective tail

= 12 + 9 /100

= 21/100

Probability of Both defectives=P(H and T)=9/100=0.09
