let total strength be x .
girls=5/8x
boys=x-5/8x=3/8x
3/8x+120=5/8x
120=5/8x-3/8x
120=2/8x
120=1/4x
120*4=x
x=480
total student is 480

The answer is 480.

Given: Fraction of the students that are girls = \frac{5}{8}

The number of girls is 120 more than the boys.

To Find: strength of the school

Solution:

Let the strength of the school be x.

No. of girls = \frac{5x}{8}

No. of boys = x - \frac{5x}{8}

According to the problem,

\frac{5x}{8} - (x - \frac{5x}{8}) = 120

\frac{5x}{8} - x + \frac{5x}{8} = 120

\frac{5x}{8} + \frac{5x}{8} = 120 + x

\frac{10x}{8} = 120 + x

⇒ 10x = 8 (120 + x)

⇒ 10x = 960 + 8x

⇒ 10x - 8x = 960

⇒ 2x = 960

⇒ x = 480

Answer) The total strength of the school is 480.
