total no of girls be y.

given,

x : y = 9 : 8

x/y = 9 / 8

therefore,

x = 9y / 8.

also

total no of students ,

x + y = 3200

9y/8 + y = 3200

on further solving,

17 y = 25600

y = 1506. approx.

hence,

x = 1694
