Given :  In a school with 727 students, 600 students offer Mathematics and 173 students both mathematics and Physics.

To find : How many students are enrolled in i) Physics ii) Maths only.

Solution:

Total Students  T = 727

Mathematics M  = 600

Physics   P  = ?

Mathematics & Physics M ∩ P  = 173

Studying None  N = 0   ( assuming)

T = M + P  -  M ∩ P +   N

=> 727 = 600 + P  - 173  + 0

=> P = 300

Students enrolled in Physics = 300

Maths only  =  M  - M ∩ P

= 600 - 173

= 427

Students enrolled in Physics = 300

Students enrolled in  Maths only   = 427
