Answer:

He hit the mark 19 times

Step-by-step explanation:

If a person hits the mark= 5 rupees

If a person misses the mark= -2 rupees

Total number of (hits)- 60

let the number of hits be x

let the number of misses be y

x+y=60

as the both will be included to find the number of times he tried to hit the marks, including hits and misses

5 rupees per hit

- 2 rupees per miss

x- hit

y- miss

5x-2y=13

13 is the total amount of money paid

this equation is formed because 5 rupees is paid per hit and -2 rupees per miss

x+y=60

5x-2y=13

(x+y=60)2

2x+2y=120

5x-2x=13

7x=133

x=133/7

x = 19

This has been solved be elimination, it can also be done by substitution as well

Answer:

He hit the mark 19 times

Step-by-step explanation:

Let x be the no. of hit mark and y be the no. of missed mark

Here we have,

x + y = 60 (equation - 1)

=> x = 60 - y (equation - 1)

And we have,

5x - 2y = 13 (equation - 2)

=> 5x = 13 + 2y (equation - 2)

From equations (1) and (2)

5(60 - y) = 13 + 2y

=> 300 - 5y = 13 + 2y

=> 300 - 13 = 2y + 5y

=> 287 = 7y

Therefore, y = 287/7 = 41

Then, x = 60 - 41 = 19.
