Given:

In a spring balance having spring constant 1960 N/m is elongated by 5 cm length.

To find:

Mass of object used ?

Calculation:

Since the object is in equilibrium when hung from the spring , we can say that the spring force (upon extension) is equal and opposite to the weight of the body.

The spring force is acting upwards while the weight force is acting downwards.

 \sf \therefore \: spring \: force = weight

 \sf \implies  \: kx = mg

 \sf \implies  \: 1960 \times  \dfrac{5}{100}  = m \times 10

 \sf \implies  \:m =  1960 \times  \dfrac{5}{1000}

 \sf \implies  \:m =  1.96 \times 5

 \sf \implies  \:m =  9.8 \: kg

So, mass of object is 9.8 kg.
