In a square ABCD, AB = (5x – 44) cm and BC = (2x – 5) cm. Find the (i) length AD (ii) length AC.

EXPLANATION:

Since it is a square,

AB=BC

5x – 44 = 2x – 5

5x – 2x = 44 – 5

3x = 39

x = 13

So, AB = 5 x 13 44

AB = 21cm

1) AD = 21 cm

Now, AC is the diagonal and Triangle ABC is a right triangle

So, AC² = AB² + BC ²

AC² = 21² + 21²

AC² = 882

AC = √882

AC = 212
