In the beginning there are x mice.

After the cat eats y mice at corner one, there are x – y mice left.

At corner two when the remaining mice double; there are 2(x – y) = 2x - 2y mice.

After the cat eats y mice at corner two, there are (2x – 2y) - y = 2x – 3y mice left.

At corner three when the remaining mice triple; there are 3(2x – 3y) = 6x – 9y mice.

After the cat eats y mice at corner three, there are (6x – 9y) – y = 6x – 10y mice left.

At corner four when the remaining mice multiply by four; there are 4(6x – 10y) = 24x - 40y mice.

After the cat eats y mice at corner four, there are (24x – 40y) – y = 24x – 41y mice left.

Since there are no mice left at corner four:

we get 24x – 41y = 0

thus  24x = 41 y

x / y = 41 /24

So if x = 41 mice at the beginning,

We get y = 24 mice eaten each time
