Given:

In a supermarket, the cost of a table lamp is rupees 870, on which 1\5th is off

The same table lamp is available at the electric shop for rupees 920 with the discount of 1/10th

To find:

(i). From where should one buy the lamp?

(ii). What is the difference in the prices?

Solution:

(i). Finding from where should one buy the lamp:

Formula to be used:

\boxed{\bold{S.P. = M.P. - [\frac{Discount}{100} \times M.P.]}}

Supermarket:

M.P. of the lamp = Rs. 870

Discount = \frac{1}{5} of M.P.

∴ S.P. of the lamp = 870 - \frac{1}{5} \times 870 = 870 - 174 = Rs.\: 696

Electric shop:

M.P. of the lamp = Rs. 920

Discount = \frac{1}{10} of M.P.

∴ S.P. of the lamp = 920 - \frac{1}{10} \times 920 = 870 - 92 = Rs.\: 828

Therefore, we can conclude:

- The S.P. of the lamp in the supermarket is lesser than in the electric shop

- \boxed{\bold{One\:should\:buy\:the\:lamp\:from\:the\:\underline{supermarket}}}

(ii). Finding the difference in the prices:

The difference in the prices of the lamp in the supermarket and in the electric shop is,

= Rs. 828 - Rs. 696

= Rs. 132

Thus, \boxed{\bold{The\:difference\:in \:the \:prices\:is\:\underline{Rs.\:132}}}
