Given :  town of 20,000 residents

each resident reads either "Town's news' or "Announcer", or both newspapers.

12,420 read "Town's news" and 11,540 read "Announcer"

To Find :   How many residents read both the newspapers

Solution:

Read  Town News  T  =  12420

Read Announcer   A  = 11540

Read Both   T ∩ A   =  ?

Read None  = 0     (As each resident reads either  one or both )

Total  = 20000

Total  =  T  +  A  -   T ∩ A  + None

=> 20000  = 12420  + 11540  -   T ∩ A   + 0

=>  T ∩ A =  3960

 3960 residents read both the newspapers
