take side AB=4cm as base.Keep compass on B & draw an arc measuring 9cm.Join A & C.Measure the side.

AB=4
BC=9
as AC proportional to AB and BC
So
AC/AB=BC/AC
=AC²=4×9
=AC=6
BC=9
as AC proportional to AB and BC
So
AC/AB=BC/AC
=AC²=4×9
=AC=6
