In a two-digit natural number, the digit at the tens place is equal
to the square of the digit at units place. If 18 is subtracted from
the number, the digits get interchanged. Find the number.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the number be 10x+y

GIVEN:

  • x=y²
  • 10x+y-18=10y+x
  • 9x-9y=18
  • x-y=2 -> x=2+y

EQUATING BOTH THE EQUATIONS WE GET AS,

2+y=y²

y²-y-2=0

(y-2)(y+1)=0

y=+2(as both the numbers are natural -1 is neglected)

x=2²=4

SO THE NUMBER IS 10(4)+2 = 40+2=42
