In a village , every weekend , thrree - eight {e.g., 3/8th } of men and one - third {e.g., 1/3th } of women participate in a social activity.

Let number of men = X
number of women = Y
then, every weekend number of men participants = 3X/8
and number of women participants = Y/3
so, total number of participants = 3X/8 + Y/3
=> 3X/8 + Y/3 = 54 .......(i)

again, question said in 54 participants , 18 are men then definitely (54 - 18) = 36 are women.
so, 3X/8 = 18
=> 3X = 8 × 18
=> X = 8 × 6 = 48

and Y/3 = 36
=> Y = 3 × 36 = 108

hence,
total number of men and women in the village = X + Y = 48 + 108 = 156

Total number of participants = 54 (Given)

Number of men participated = 18(Given)

Number of women participated = 54 - 18 = 36

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find the number of men in the village:

3/8 of the men = 18

1/8 of the men = 18 ÷ 3 = 6

8/8 of the men = 6 x 8 = 48

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find the number of women:

1/3 of the women = 36

3/3 of the women = 36 x 3 = 108

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find total number of men and women in the village:

48 + 108 = 156

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer: There are 156 people in the village.
