Given:

Amount for which car was purchased = Rs 5,00,000

Amount for which car was sold = Rs 3,50,000

Woman's age = 3 × Son's age

Husband's age = 5 + Woman's age

Son's age - 5 = \frac{1}{6} × (Father's age - 5)

To find:

Age of Son when car was purchased.

Solution:

Let woman's age be W, son's age be S and father/husband's age be F

W=3*S...(1)

F=5+W...(2)

Substituting equation (1) in equation (2)

F=5+3S...(3)

S-5=\frac{1}{6}*(F-5)...(4)

Substituting equation (3) in equation (4)

S-5=\frac{1}{6}*(5+3S-5)

S-5=\frac{1}{6}*3S

S-5=\frac{S}{2}

S-\frac{S}{2} =5

\frac{S}{2} =5

S=10

Age of son = 10 years.

Age of woman's son when she purchased her car was 10 years.
