The author calls Mrs. Packletide an exception to the rule of the world being governed by hunger and love because her motives and actions were driven by vanity. She was extremely jealous of rising fame of Loona Bimberton and was ready to go to any extent in order to outshine her.

The text has multiple instances that reflect her vanity. She organised a tiger hunt so that it becomes the breaking news of the day. The people who were busy talking about the ride of Loona in Algerian aviator would then talk of nothing else than her tiger hunt. Even the luncheon was not actually to honour Loona but to showcase her own talent.

MRS.PACKLETIDE wanted 2 outshine Loona Bimberton. So she attempted to kill a tiger at any cost. She gave advance 2 the villagers to choose a old and weak tiger for shooting and made MISS. MEBBIN as her paid companion. She even brought a cottage to Mebbin not to reveal all her secrets in shooting (killed a goat instead of tiger)....
