Answer:

a = 15 cm , b = 25 cm

Step-by-step explanation:

Given : AB = 20 cm , BC = a , AC = b , a+b= 40 so

a= (40 - b) cm

By using PGT ,

(AB) 2 + (BC) 2 = (AC) 2

(20) 2 + (a) 2 = (b) 2

Put (40 -b ) at place of (a)

400 + (40-b) 2 = (b) 2

400 + [ 1600 + (b) 2 + 2(40)(-b)] =(b) 2

2000 -80b = (b) 2 - (b) 2

2000 -80b = 0

2000 = 80 b

2000 ÷ 80 = b

25 = b

so b = 25 cm

a = 40 - b

= 40 - 25

= 15 cm
