It is due to the fact that in Physics, an acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity.

Therefore, for a free-falling object, the velocity increases at the rate of 9.8 meter per second squared.

Hence, after every second, the object gains 9.8 meters per second than what was in the previous second.

However, technically, acceleration increases by a very minuscule amount when an object is near to the surface of the earth.
