Antonio and Sebastian conspire a plan to kill Alonso and Gonzalo in their sleep. Antonio arouses Sebastian's greed for power and Sebastian promises to cancel the tribute Milan pays to Naples (for assisting in dethroning Prospero permanently) once he becomes the King of Naples. After they kill Alonso and Gonzalo, they would return to Naples and declare Alonso dead due to shipwreck. Prospero's airy spirit Ariel overhears their plan and wakes up Gonzalo with a song containing alarming words of-

"While you here do snoring lie,

Open-eyed conspiracy

His time doth take.

If of life you keep a care,

Shake off slumber and beware.

Awake, awake!"

Gonzalo wakes up cautioned and others wake after him. The sight he sees shocks him. Antonio and Sebastian have their swords drawn. Antonio and Sebastian's plan to assasinate Alonso is thus trampled.
