Hydrogen acts as the ADSORBATE.

First of all , we need to know two terms:

  • Adsorbent: It is the substance whose surface adsorbs another substance.

  • Adsorbate: It is the substance which gets adsorbed.

Now, when Nickel catalyst is added to hydrogen gas, Hydrogen gas gets adsorbed on the large surface area of the finely divided Nickel metal pieces.

Hence, we can say that Hydrogen is the Adsorbate, whereas Nickel is the Adsorbent.
