Explanation:

Glucose in cytoplasm is broken down into Pyruvic acid and energy by a process known as Glycolysis.

  • In the absence of oxygen, Pyruvic acid breaks down into Ethanol, Carbon dioxide and energy. This process is known as Alcoholic fermentation.

  • When there is a lack of oxygen, Pyruvic acid gets broken down into Lactic acid and energy. This process mainly happens in muscles and thereby causing muscle cramps.

  • In the presence of oxygen, Pyruvic acid splits into carbon dioxide, water and energy. Since it happens in the presence of oxygen, it is known as Aerobic respiration.
