The occurrence of both C3 and C4 photosynthetic characteristics in a single Zea mays plant.

The activities of the carboxylating enzymes ribulose-1,5-biphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase and phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase in leaves of three-week old Zea mays plants grown under phytotron conditions were found to vary according to leaf position.

In the lower leaves the activity of PEP carboxylase was lower than that of RuBP carboxylase, while the upper leaves exhibited high levels of PEP carboxylase.

C3 cycle occours in the chloroplast of the leaves.

The Calvin cycle has three stages. In the first stage that is the stage 1, the enzyme RuBisCO incorporates with carbon dioxide into an organic molecule. In the second stage that is the stage 2, the organic molecule is reduced. In the third stage that is stage 3, RuBP, the molecule that starts the cycle, is regenerated so that the cycle can continue.
