It is coal gas. The coal remains are coke. The liquid through which it is passed is coal tar.It is formed at bottom is dark coloured. Whereas the liquid formed above the coal tar is ammonical liquor. The gas obtained is coal gas used as a source of energy. Earlier it was used for the lightning of street lights.
