In an area in which a forest was cut to make a city, it was found that the water table went down.what could be the reason for this?

There can be many reasons for this . some reasons include -
1) lack of drainage of rainwater into ground because of roads , footpaths etc which don't allow rainwater to seep into the grounds
2) cutting of trees leads to soil erosion which can lead to lower ground water
