in an election between 2 candidates, one, candidate secured 47% of votes polled and lost by 12366 votes. find the total votes polled and the votes secured by the winning candidate.

By the given data we can conclude that one of the candidates got 47% votes and the other one got 53% votes.
Hence the the candidate lost by 6% of the total votes.
Let total number of votes be X.
Thus 
6% of X = 12366
X = (12366*100)/6
X = 206100

And since the winning candidate got 53% of the votes, the votes secured by the winning candidate are
53% of X = (53*206100)/100
Winning number of votes = 109233

Thus the total number of votes = 206100
The number of votes the winning candidate got = 109233
