In an election contested by two candidates, one candidate got 40% of total votes and still lost by 500 votes, find the total number of votes casted?

Answer:

Let the total votes be x

the 1st candidate got 40% of total votes=40/100 × x

2nd candidate got 100%-40%=60%

60/100 × x

Since the difference between the votes=500

the difference between the votes in % =60x% - 40x%=20x%

therefore,

 \frac{20x}{100}  = 500

x =  \frac{500 \times 100}{20}

x = 2500
