In an electric bell, there lies an electromagnet, which is a soft iron core of U-shape. When you switch on the current through the circuit, due to the magnetic field formed by the current, the soft iron core (of the electromagnet) gets magnetised. Since iron gets attracted to a magnet, the electromagnet attracts it

A current carrying coil of an insulated wire wrapped around a piece of iron is called anelectromagnet. It behaves as a magnet when current passes through it which results inattracting the piece of iron. In an electric bell piece of iron is wound over a coil.
