let the number of television sold be x

then the number of refrigerator sold be x+8

x +( x+8 ) = 40

2x = 40 - 8

2x = 32

x = 32/2

x = 16

hence, no. of television sold = x = 16

then, no. of refrigerator sold = x+8 =16 + 8=24

OR if you let refrigerator sold be x

then refrigerator sold = 16 and television sold = 24
