According to Hoffman's rule, the less substituted product is predominant.

  • When alkene is produced by the heating of 4° ammonium hydroxide, the reaction is known as the Hoffmann elimination reaction.
  • In this reaction the ammonium group has a strong -I effect. Due to this strong -I affect the beta H of the substrate become acidic but when a +I effect group is attached it decreases the acidity that's why less substituted product gets predominate.
