Climate change has been a global concern for a very long time. However, neither the general public nor world leaders were very aware or inclined towards focussing on environmental issues. At a time like this, young environmentalist Greta Thunberg from Sweden came into the picture.

Greta's environmentalism started when she won an essay writing contest. The topic was on the environment. A few months later, the eight year old started protesting in front of the Swedish parliament to raise awareness about climate change. What was only one child's perspective and protest, grew into an entire movement. This happened only because of social media.

When news about Thunberg's "School strike for climate change" protest went viral, she not only gained followers but also fame. She inspired children all across the world to organise similar protests and force the authorities to focus on climate change. As a teenager Thunberg spoke at the United Nations about the seriousness of the issue and asked world leaders to take concrete steps.

Social media in this case has not only highlighted Thunberg's activism but has also helped her share her views and develop fan following. It has also got world leaders and the United Nations to pay attention to her. Though some leaders have ridiculed her while others have supported her, the interaction with each leader has garnered greater media coverage for the environmental issues.

Social media has set off a wave of acknowledgement. Each time Greta Thunberg makes an appearance or is interviewed, har views reach out to more and more people. This in turn adds momentum to her movement and also cements her celebrity status. Thus, social media has helped highlight a pre-existing issue and given the local protest in one nation, the shape of a global movement.
