Let X be total number of Students. Then,

Total number of students = number of students failed + number of students passed.

X = X * 14% + 559
X = (X * 14)/100 + 559
X = (14X + 55900) / 100
100X = 14X + 55900

X = 650

So the total students are 650, so the number of failed students would be:

650 - 559 = 91.

Hence... 91 students failed in the exam.

Your answer :-

let \: the \: total \: number \: of \: students = x \\  \\ number \: of \: passed \: students = 559 \\  \\failed \: ones = 14\% \\  \\ failes \: students + passed \: students = total \: number \: of \: students \\  \\  =  >  \frac{14}{100} x + 559 = x \\  \\  =  >  \frac{14x + 55900}{100}  = x \\  \\  cross \: multiplication.... \\  \\  =  > 14x + 55900 = 100x \\  \\  =  > 55900 = 100x - 14x \\  \\  =  > 55900 = 86x \\  \\  =  >  \frac{55900}{86}  = x \\  \\  =  > 650 = x \\  \\ total \: students = x = 650 \\  \\  failed \: students =  \frac{14}{100} x =  \frac{14}{100}  \times 650  = 91
