In an exam, a student scored 50% of the maximum
marks and yet failed by 12 marks. If he had scored
10% more than what he scored, he would have just
managed to get the pass percentage. What are the
maximum marks of the paper?

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the maximum marks be x and the passing mark be y

He scored 50% of the max marks and yet failed by 12 marks, this implies

50/100×x + 12 = y ( since he needed 12 more marks to pass): Eqn 1

If he had scored 10% more of his earlier marks he would have passed,

10/100×x/2 + x/2 =y Eqn:2

From 1 and 2

10/100×x/2 =12

x=240 (max mark)
