The passing marks of the exam = 270

Given :

  • In an exam Noureen scored 222 marks and failed by 8% marks.

  • In the same exam Pallavi scored 204 marks and failed by 11% marks

To find :

The passing marks of the exam is

1. 240

2. 360

3. 300

4. 270

5. 180

Solution :

Step 1 of 3 :

Form the equation to calculate total marks in the exam

Let total marks in the exam = 100x

Since Noureen scored 222 marks and failed by 8% marks

∴ Passing marks of the exam = 8x + 222

Again Pallavi scored 204 marks and failed by 11% marks

∴ Passing marks of the exam = 11x + 204

So by the given condition

\displaystyle \sf 8x + 222 = 11x + 204

Step 2 of 3 :

Calculate total marks in the exam

\displaystyle \sf 8x + 222 = 11x + 204

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }11x + 204 = 8x + 222

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }11x - 8x = 222 - 204

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }3x = 18

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }x =  \frac{18}{3}

\displaystyle \sf{ \implies }x = 6

∴ Total marks in the exam = 100x = 100 × 6 = 600

Step 3 of 3 :

Calculate passing marks of the exam

∴ Passing marks of the exam

= 8x + 222

= (8 × 6) + 222

= 48 + 222

= 270
