Question :

In an exam Ravi got 28% marks, failed by 14 marks. Sami get 48% marks and passed by 16 marks. Find the pass marks.

Answer:

The pass marks is  56.

Given:

Ravi got 28% marks.

Ravi failed by 14 marks.

Sami get 48% marks.

Sami passed by 16 marks.

To find:

The pass marks of the exam.

Explanation:

Let, the total marks of the exam be, 'n'.

Ravi got 28% marks.

∴ Ravi got ( n×28/100)

= 28n/100 marks

Sami get 48% marks.

∴ Sami got (n×48/100)

= 48n/100 marks.

Ravi failed by 14 marks.

Sami passed by 16 marks.

∴ According to the problem:

(48n/100) - (28/100) =  (16+14)

⇒ (48n - 28n)/100 = 30

⇒ 20n =(30×100)

⇒ n =(30×100)/20

⇒ n = (30×5)

⇒ n = 150

∴ The total marks is 150.

Case-1:

Ravi got 28% marks.

∴ Ravi got_

(150×28/100)

=(3×28/2)

= (3×14)

= 42 marks.

Ravi failed by 14 marks.

∴ The  pass marks is_

(42+14)

= 56 marks.

Case-2:

Sami get 48% marks.

∴ Sami got_

(150×48/100)

= (3×48/2)

=(3×24)

= 72 marks.

Sami passed by 16 marks.

∴ The pass marks is_

(72-16)

= 56 marks.

Since, in both the cases we get the pass marks is 56.

∴ The pass marks is 56.
