15% of students are failed,
hence 75% of students are passed.
let total no. of students = y
y × 75/100 = 1275
y = (1275 × 100)/75 =1700 students appeared in the exam

Let the total number of students be x

15% failed.

So, 100 - 15 = 85 % passed

85 % of x = 1275
85/100 × x = 1275
x = 1275 × 100/85 = 1500
