In an examination 2500 students appeared out of which 1100 were girls. 50% of boys nd 40% of girls passed the examination. what percentage of the candidates failed in the examination

first find the number of boys

2500 students - 1100 girls = 1400 boys

now find 50% of the boys. 50% = .50

1400*.50 = 700  

now find 40% of the girls, 40% = .40

1100*.40 = 440

now add the 2 percentages:

700+440 = 1140 passed

now find the number who failed

2500 - 1140 = 1360

so 1360/2500 students failed. divide this out to get the percentage.

so .544 = 54.4% of the students failed the exam.
