Here is the solution:

----------------------------------------

Find the number of boys:

Number of boys = total - number of girls

Number of boys = 2500 - 1100 = 1400

Find the number of students that passed:

boys = 50% x 1400 = 0.5 x 1400 = 700

girls = 40% x 1100 = 0.4 x 1100 = 440

Total students that passed = 700 + 440 = 1140

Find the number of students that failed:

Number of students failed = Total students - students that passed

Number of students failed = 2500 - 1140 = 1360

Find the percentage of candidates that failed:

Percentage that failed = failed/total x 100

Percentage that failed = 1360/2500 x 100 = 54.4%

Answer: 54.4% failed the examination
