In an examination 60% failed in social and 55% failed in science if 24 failed in both subject and none of them passed in both subject .find the number of students who passed only in science

Answer:

M= social

E= science

n(M) = 60%

n(E)= 55%

n(M U E) =100% ( as none passed in both)

n(M U E) = n(M)+n(E)-n(M ∩ E)

or, 100=60+55-n(M ∩ E)

or, n(M ∩ E) = 15

now, 15% of total examines = 24

total examines = 24*100/15= 160

no of students who passed in science only =( 55-15)% of 160 = 40*160/100=64
