Heyya there.....

Let the number of all the candidates be x.

Therefore the number of those who passed will be:

65% of x  = 65/100 × x  = 0.65x candidates

The percentage of the remaining candidates is 100% - 65% = 35%

The percentage of those who failed will b:

              35% - 17% = 18

               18%/2 = 9%

                9% + 17% = 26%

Therefore those who failed were 26% of the candidates and those who did not turn up were 9%.

The number of those who failed:

26% of x   = 26/100 x = 0.26x

The number of those who did not turn up:

9% of x = 9/100 x = 0.09x

In this question you need at least a figure that correlates to one of the groups of candidates to solve it.

If the candidates who failed were 420, then those who passed were:

If 26% = 420

Then 65% = 420 × 65 /26  = 1050

And the number of those who failed = 420 × 9/26 = 146

⇒This used as an example on how to work out such a question.
