Given : In an examination, 80% students passed in Science, 70% in Mathematics and 60% in  both science and Mathematics.

65 students failed in both subjects

To Find :  what is the total number of students?

Solution:

Total Students = 100 %

Passed in Science = S = 80%

Passed in Mathematics = M = 70 %

Passed in Both = S ∩ M = 60  %

Failed in Both = F  %

=> Total  = S + M  - S∩M + F

=> 100 = 80 + 70 - 60  + F

=> F = 10

10 % Failed in both

65 students failed in both subjects

10%  = 65

100 % = 650

Total Students = 650
