In an examination 92% of the candidates passed. If the number of candidates who
failed is 400. Find the total number of candidates who appeared in the
examination.

total number of candidates appeared in the exam =x

no of candidates failed =400

no of candidates passed =92% of x

no of candidates failed+no of candidates passed=total

400+92%of x=x

400+92x/100 =x

400+23x/25 =x

10000+23x/25 =x

10000+23x=25x

10000=25x-23x

10000=2x

x=10000/2=5000

therefore, total number of candidates who appeared in the

examination are 5000
